Macalester College Athletic Hall of
Fame Nomination Form

Five New Inductees Join
M Club Hall of Fame October 21st at Kagin

Macalester’s M Club Athletic Hall of Fame will grow Friday night (Oct. 21, 2005) when five new members are inducted at Kagin Commons on the Macalester Campus.  The banquet and ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Alexander G. Hill Ballroom.

The five Hall of Fame Inductees are: Dr. Clifford J. Caine '55 (tennis coach); Dr. Jerry M. Ingalls '54 (swimming & golf); Christopher M. Link '95 (track & football); Dr. Paul L.H. Olson '72 (football & track) and Jack Rock '53 (football, baseball & basketball)

Macalester will also honor the 2004-05 Athletes of the Year, Erik Jackson (basketball) and May Lin Kessenich (volleyball & tennis).

Here are brief biographies on the five new inductees:

Jack Rock '53 (Football, Baseball, Basketball)
Jack Rock was a standout for Macalester in football and baseball in the early Fifties and as a senior was selected as Macalester Athlete of the Year by the Athenean Society. He went on to achieve a highly successful career in high school teaching, administration and coaching. Rock was the leading receiver for the football team for three years while also leading the team in rushing for two seasons. He made the all-conference squad as a junior and in his senior season was the only MIAC player named all-state both on offense and defense. Rock was named the team's MVP twice and in his sophomore year the team fell just short of winning the league title. He was also a baseball standout, batting over .300 in all three seasons he played while helping the Scots win their only MIAC baseball championship in 1950. A star at St. Paul Central High School before enrolling at Macalester, Rock is considered one of that school's finest athletes ever. An M Club board of directors member and Macalester Alumni Board director, Rock served as teacher, principal or assistant principal at several Minnesota public schools. He coached football as an assistant at Minneapolis Patrick Henry High School for seven years, winning the Twin Cities championship in '55 and '60.

Dr. Jerry M. Ingalls '54 (Swimming & Golf)
Dr. Jerry M. Ingalls was named by the college's Athenean Society as Macalester's Athlete of the Year as a senior in 1953-54. He played four sports at Mac, excelling as a swimmer on some outstanding Scot teams. Ingalls was the team captain as a senior, while earning conference championships in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races. He lettered in football as a sophomore, won three varsity letters in golf and had a successful post-Macalester amateur golf career. In the 1970s Dr. Ingalls was designated by his alma mater as a ?Distinguished Citizen? while in the middle of a distinguished medical career. In 1980 he was selected president of the Illinois State Medical Society, one of the largest medical organizations in the country. He is a board certified general surgeon. Dr. Ingalls was elected Citizen of the Year for his community of Paris, Illinois, where he was instrumental in getting a YMCA program started.

Dr. Clifford Caine '55 (Macalester Tennis Coach 1960-70)
Clifford Caine '55 had outstanding success as tennis coach from 1960 to 1970.  The Scots were conference champions in seven of those 11 years and never had a losing season.  He later achieved great coaching success at St. Paul Academy, winning eight Minnesota state championships with his boys and girls teams.  In 2004, he was inducted into the Minnesota Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame.  Caine has earned both a J.D. and a Ph.D. degree and has held administrative posts at the University of Minnesota, Macalester College, St. Paul Academy and Breck School.  He also has been an educational consultant, providing school and college counseling for students.  He served as president of the Minnesota State High School Girls Tennis Association and state president of the National Association of College Admission Counselors.  Finally, he has written two books on the college counseling and admissions process.

Paul Olson '72 (Football, Track & Field)
Paul Olson was a standout in football and track and field for the Scots, while also wrestling and playing basketball for one year each. We went on to play professional football from 1972-74 for the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears after being a force in the MIAC as a dominating defensive tackle. A standout in track and field, also, Olson placed eighth at the national meet in the shot put, and still holds the Macalester school shot put record after 35 years. His school shot put record, set in 1970, is the longest-surviving men's track and field school mark at Mac. Olson is executive vice president for institutional advancement at Bethel University in St. Paul, overseeing the departments of alumni and parent services, communications and marketing, and development. A founding executive officer of Sterling Commerce, Inc., a company specializing in E-Commerce, Olson joined the Minnesota Vikings as a front office executive and was an early innovator in the use of information technology for game analysis and strategy.

Chris Link '95 (Track & Field, Football)
An All-American and school record-holder in the 400-meter dash, Chris Link was a four-year standout for the Scots in both track and field and football. Link set seven track and field school records at Macalester and wrapped up a great sprinting career by earning All-America honors in the 400-meter dash. He won the MIAC 400-meter title as a senior in a year when three quarter-milers from the conference went on to earn All-America honors. He earned numerous all-conference awards both indoor and outdoor in the sprints, and is currently the school record-holder both indoors and outdoors in the 200 and 400. In football, Link started every game in the defensive backfield for four seasons and as senior in '04 was named honorable mention All-MIAC. He intercepted six passes and was third on the team in tackles three times, collecting a career-high 79 tackles as a junior. Link continues his Macalester athletics connections with his work in the M Club as a board member and officer.
