Chemistry and biology majors with an added emphasis in biochemistry have opportunities to work side-by-side with faculty conducting research on new and exciting scientific questions.
Independent projects allow students to get involved in research as early as their sophomore year. Summer research funding is available from sources such as the prestigious Beckman Research Fellowship award received by Macalester or endowed institutional funds through the Keck Foundation and Beltmann family as well as individual faculty research grants. Students who want even more in-depth research experience may complete an honors project.
Many students present their senior research at regional scientific meetings and a number have also presented their findings at national scientific conferences. Students may also be awarded summer research positions at such institutions as Harvard University, University of Chicago, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the Mayo Clinic and Washington University.
