Resources

A state-of-the-art science facility housing the Chemistry and Biology Departments includes laboratories for laser and NMR spectroscopy, mammalian and bacterial cell culture, ultracentrifugation and chromatography, computer-assisted image analysis, radioisotope work, biomechanical analysis, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and organic synthesis and analysis. These facilities are configured to support student-faculty research and include fully equipped teaching laboratories, supporting the mainline curricula in biology and chemistry.

Two computer labs each containing 14 Macintosh systems enable students to run simulations, perform graphical and statistical analysis, and write lab reports and papers. Because faculty members are active in research as well as teaching, National Science Foundation grants and other funds have provided advanced equipment for student and faculty use including:

  • Varian Gemini 2000-300 MHz broadband NMR spectrometer
  • Nicolet Magna 550 FT-IR and Perkin Elmer 1430 IR spectrometers
  • Beckman DU-7400 UV/visible spectrometer
  • Waters HPLC apparatus
  • Continuum Nd: YAG-pumped dye laser system
  • Coherent 899-29 Ti:sapphire/dye ring laser system
  • Buck model 200A atomic absorption spectrometer
  • Agilent Technologies gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer system
  • Hewlett-Packard chiral capillary gas chromatograph
  • Transmission and scanning electron microscopes
  • X-ray diffractometer
  • X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (in the divisional Keck facility)
