Professor Hornbach is an aquatic ecologist. Dan has spent the past 18 years researching freshwater mussel populations in the St. Croix River, a National Wild and Scenic River.  His work has been funded by the EPA, Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service.  Over 50 students have been involved in the project.  Dan has also been a member of two Endangered Species Recovery Teams sponsored by the Fish and Wildlife Service.  Dan teaches courses in aquatic ecology.
