Mr. Richard J. Christman served Macalester
College as Resident Naturalist at Ordway for over fifteen years.
One of his major contributions to the history of Ordway is his written
collection of 129 Ordway Bulletins.
Mr. Christman was the
first naturalist at Ordway; he actively promoted the Natural Area,
hosting literally hundreds of visiting groups each year. In
recent times, the level of participation he cultivated at Ordway has
yet to be seen. Another major contribution includes his extensive
bird-banding records--over 40,000 individual records are archived with
the USGS agency, and will be available on the Ordway website in the
future.
All thanks to Mr. Christman--- he spent
many happy visits with students and staff at Ordway in his last
year. We still learn from his writings and teachings to this
day. Mr. Christman passed away in December 2001. As his
daughter, Linda Christman-Pitts, put it, "He was the consummate birder
and tour guide for his family as well as his students." Read her tribute to her dad.
