It was kind of solemn, drifting down the big, still river, laying on our backs, looking up at stars, and we didn't even feel like talking aloud.
-- Mark Twain (American writer), 1884, from Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Macward Bound
Pre-Orientation Outdoor Adventure Program
August 28 thru September 2, 2009
Information for parents
When should parents arrive and how long should they stay?
Parents can bring their son/daughter to Macalester on August 28, however we strongly encourage parents to attend Parent Orientation, Friday, September 4th-6th. Most students arrive on their own on Friday, August 28th with only their belongings for the trip and two days preceding Orientation.
Students must arrive between 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Friday, August 28th for check-in with Macward Bound and their residence hall (If this time is absolutley not feasible, please contact Allison Greenlee). Students arriving prior toAugust 28 will be responsible for finding their own housing. Information on suggested hotels is listed below.
Students will depart at 7am on the morning of August 29. Parents are not allowed to set-up their son or daughter’s room in their absence. If possible, parents are encouraged to bring most items or help their student move the majority of their belongings into their residence hall room on Friday, September 4 and participate fully in the Parent Orientation program. The Orientation program for parents ends at 10:00 am on Sunday, September 6.
Where can parents stay during Orientation?
Popular choices include the Days Inn (1964 University Avenue), Embassy Suites Downtown (175 East 10th Street), the Saint Paul Hotel (350 Market Street), and several nearby bed and breakfasts. We recommend using http://hotel-guides.us/minnesota/st-paul-mn-hotels.html for more information.
Can students arrive before or after August 28?
Students placed in a MacWard Bound trip will have access to their residence hall room on August 28. Students will spend the night in their room and depart early on the morning of the August 29. There will not be significant time available for unpacking and moving in on the August 28. If students arrive prior to August 28 we suggest booking accommodations at the hotels listed above. All participating students will depart from campus at 7am the morning of August 29 and will forfeit their privilege of participating in this experience if not checked in on August 28.
How do students get to Mac from the Airport?
The Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport is less than 15 minutes from campus. We encourage students to take a cab from the airport to campus (Campus Center, SW corner of Snelling Ave and Grand Ave., Macalester College). Typical cab fare from the airport to campus is $15-$20. Students can also choose to take the bus from the airport to campus utilizing the light rail (Hiawatha Line route 55) and Bus #84 (from the 46th street station). Bus fare is $1.50.
Will students need money for the week?
Students will need money for one meal during their return drive on September 2nd, $10-$15 should be sufficient. All other meals are provided.
