History of the Student Lounge
Beginning in 2002, students at Macalester and the Macalester College Student Government (MCSG) starting lobbying higher administration for a dedicated space in the then-new Ruth Stricker Dayton Campus Center for recreation and relaxation. MCSG then conducted a survey on campus to study the attitudes towards a “game room” in the Campus Center, with an overwhelming majority supporting the idea of such a space. By 2003, Macalester was moving forward on securing funds to renovate a storage and sump room to a suitable recreation space, complete with lighting, sound system, and space for pool tables, furniture, and a big-screen television. The Student Lounge, as it is today, opened in 2004, with initiative from highly motivated students and donors.
