International Students Job Search: Summary of Visa Regulations

While most international students generally hold either F-1 (student) or J-1 (exchange visitor) visas while studying in the United States, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) permits students in both categories to be employed full-time by U.S. employers through the "Practical Training" program.

When seeking employment opportunities in the United States, it is important that you obtain the necessary employment authorization document(s).

  • Macalester's International Student Program can assist you in obtaining information about international student employment, including visa eligibility and application requirements.
  • The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is an important resource for obtaining government information on a number of topics, including the H-1B visa (temporary worker).

It is important to remember that obtaining the necessary authorization to work in the U.S. after graduation is subject to a variety of factors.  Attend to all requirements and make sure you submit all application materials on time!
