Job Listings: Temporary and Staffing Agencies
Please see this article: How to Use Temp Agencies to Find a Job from CollegeRecruiter.com
There are hundreds of temporary placement and staffing businesses out there. Ranging from firms that specialize in CEO's to firms that do only industrial placement, finding an agency that best fits your needs takes a little research. These firms generally break down into:
- Search Firms
- Employment Agencies
- Contract Employers
- Temporary Placement Services
Most recruitment firms specialize in a particular field, industry or occupational level. Review to see if it is a match for you.
Watch carefully to determine if you or the employer is paying the fee - you can ask to only see or be referred to employer-paid listings. Many firms, particularly temporary placement agencies, will require that you take some skill assessments, to determine level of proficiency with particular software, equipment, etc.
If you are considering using an agency to help you find full-time employment, remember that only about 10% of job seekers find their full-time employment through such firms (according to the "Minnesota Job Seekers Sourcebook" 1996). So make sure you are employing other job search strategies in addition to the agency to increase your options.
In working with temporary and contract firms, be selective about which firms you approach. Be sure to clarify the type of work you want, your acceptable salary level or wage, the days or times you can work, how far you're willing to travel and duration of assignments. And, as always, get everything in writing!
If you are not sure about a firm, most states have a statewide organization that govern the ethical standards for its member firms. In Minnesota, the Minnesota Association of Personnel Services can provide a list of members or answer questions of concern (612.835.4333).
Targeting Liberal Arts
The Macalester College Career Development Center has received information from GradStaff, Inc., a staffing agency that focuses on placing recent college graduates in entry-level professional positions, especially graduates from selective liberal arts colleges. If you are looking for temporary or temp to hire positions, it is an organization that you might want to check out. They also have offices in Chicago, Milwaukee and Denver. As with any organization, check it out to see if it is a correct match for you. The CDC has limited information on other agencies as well as a notebook with listings received from temp firms.
