Correspondence: Cover/Application Letter Sample Two February 28, 1999 1600 Grand Avenue Mr. Thomas Shields Dear Mr. Shields: I am writing to inform you of my interest in a Financial Analyst position with Morgan Stanley, Dean Witter, Discover & Co. The position was advertised through the Macalester College Career Development Center. I am currently a senior majoring in Economics with a minor in Political Science. As my enclosed resume indicates, the unique combination of work experience, education, and communication skills which I possess will allow me to make a meaningful contribution to Morgan Stanley. Through my education at Macalester, I have obtained a solid background in Economics, particularly Finance, complemented by a broad exposure to Political Science. I have developed outstanding analytical abilities with an excellent mathematical foundation. As an intern in Dean Witter, I was introduced to the highly competitive, dynamic environment of the brokerage industry which gave me invaluable experience in working with financial tools (particularly spreadsheet packages) and creating client presentations. Since then, I have built upon this experience through my current involvement with Andersen Consulting which has taught me how to work as a member of a team and how to meet deadlines under pressure. I have also gained a strong understanding of the dynamics of the consulting industry and the importance of interpersonal skills in client relationships. Finally, my interest in computers has allowed me to develop excellent skills that are crucially important in today's global business environment. I am particularly comfortable with popular financial software, including some brokerage industry-specific applications. The Morgan Stanley, Dean Witter, Discover & Co. Financial Analyst position is of special interest to me because it is with one of the premier investment banking firms. I would appreciate the opportunity to contribute to a firm with such an impressive U.S. and global presence and with a vision to create the financial powerhouse of the future.
