Interviewing: Preparation
Research the Position
Attempt to find out as much as possible about the position that is available. Request that a job description be sent to you. Talk with your contacts in the organization.
Research the Company
Find out as much as possible about the company's purpose and products. Read any information that the company publishes. You can access the company's home page via the web.
Research Yourself
Based on what you know about the opening and the company, list the traits and skills that are needed for the job. Now, in terms of the qualifications necessary for the job, consider your experiences, skills and strengths. Identify examples of activities or work experience where you exhibit the necessary qualifications.
Practice Answering Questions
Anticipate the possible questions that you may be asked during the interview and formulate your answers. Practice your responses so that you sound confident, but not rehearsed.
Prepare Questions to Ask the Employer
Be sure to come with questions to ask during the interview. Pay attention so you do not ask for information that has already been covered.
Bring Extra Copies of Your Resume with You
Having extra resumes with you allows you the opportunity to reference it during the interview. Also, in the event that the employer misplaces your resume, you can provide an extra copy.
Avoid Extremes in Dress
Clothes should reflect the type of work you are applying for. Although it is usually best to err on the side of conservatism, make it a rule to find out how employees dress and plan to dress appropriately.
Plan to Arrive at Least 15 Minutes Early
This allows you time to accommodate for any unforeseen delays either in traffic or with parking.
Relax Before Going into the Interview
Take deep breaths and focus on your skills and strengths. Remember that the purpose of the interview is an exchange of information.
