Help Wanted: The Federal Government is Hiring

Did you know that one of the few sectors reporting a projected increase in its hiring of new college grads is the US Government? Over the next five years, the Federal Office of Personnel Management (OPM) projects that one-third of full-time federal employees will leave the government workforce (that's over 550,000 employees!). This site provides an overview of the types of federal jobs that exist and provides information on how to find and apply for federal internships and entry level careers.

•  Federal Career Intern Program FCIP provides two-year, full-time positions for recent college graduates. Fellows complete rotational assignments and receive extensive training in preparation for future public employment. Note that these are not short-term internships.

•  Best Places to Work The Partnership for Public Service and American University 's Institute for the Study of Public Policy Implementation (ISPPI) publish rankings of employee satisfaction and commitment in the federal government for several government offices.

Call to Serve

Call to Serve is a joint effort of the Partnership for Public Service and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to educate a new generation about the importance of a strong civil service, help re-establish links between federal agencies and campuses, and provide students with information about federal jobs. Click here to learn more about the Call to Serve initiative.

Macalester is one of five colleges and universities nationwide awarded a 2008-2009 grant from the “Call to Serve” initiative. The grant will be used to educate Macalester students about internship and career opportunities in the federal civil service.
