Admissions Tests: Computer Adaptive Testing

While some admissions tests continue to be administered using a paper-and-pencil format, others (e.g., GRE) are being administered as a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT). The following CAT information was taken from The Princeton Review online.

Although the questions haven’t changed, there is a big difference between the format and scoring of a CAT and a paper-and-pencil test. A paper-and-pencil test gives each question the same point value, and people usually approach the test with the goal to finish. In contrast, a CAT gives different values to different questions. CAT questions are divided into thirds, and the first third of the questions in any section is weighted the most. A section will begin with an "average-level" question. If the question is answered correctly, the test-taker’s score will increase and the next question will be harder; if the question is answered incorrectly, the test-taker’s score will decrease and the next question will be easier. So potentially, each test-taker can have a different test in terms of the questions they see. To obtain higher scores, a test-taker must answer deeper level/more difficult questions correctly.

CAT Test Taking Strategies

  • Practice Computer Adaptive Tests! Practicing will help you to become familiar with the test format and more comfortable with computerized testing.
  • Be cautious!!! The CAT doesn’t let you go backward to change an answer!
  • Pace yourself and focus on accuracy as opposed to quantity.
  • Do not leave any unanswered questions! When there is only one minute left, fill in any remaining questions with a letter even if you have to guess.
