Applying: Admissions Tests

Graduate and professional schools frequently require applicants to submit scores on standardized tests. Students are encouraged to check each school they are considering for test requirements. They may need to take more than one examination in their application process.

Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
The GRE General Test and Writing Assessment Test are only being administered as a computer adaptive test (CAT). GRE Subject Tests are paper-based. Registration and test date information is available in the GRE registration bulletins in the Career Development Office.

Miller Analogies Test (MAT)
The MAT is given at testing centers throughout the United States and Canada. Usually the test is given as needed, and fees may vary. The MAT is administered at the University of Minnesota.

Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)
The GMAT is administered as a computer adaptive test, the paper and pencil version is no longer available. Details are available in the GMAT Information Bulletin at the Career Development Center.

The GMAT Information Bulletin is a free publication prepared for individuals who will take the Graduate Management Admission Test to apply for admission to graduate schools of management. The policy, fees, and procedures described in the current edition of the Bulletin apply to all aspects of the GMAT program for the academic year. Fees are subject to change without notice. This 37-booklet contains detailed information concerning registration, test content and preparation, what to expect on test day, and GMAT scores.

Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
The Law School Admission Council/Law School Admissions Services (LSAC/LSAS) administer the LSAT four times a year (however, it is not given at every center on every date). The LSAT & LSDAD Registration and Information book is available at the Career Development Center.

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
The MCAT is required by medical schools and tests student understanding of biology, chemistry and physics, scientific problem solving and critical thinking, and writing skills. Offered twice a year at testing centers in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and selected countries. MCAT registration and information materials are available at the Career Development Center.

  • The "Premedical Handbook," by Kathleen K. Parson, Ph.D. and James R. Smail, Ph.D. (available in the Career Development Center) was prepared for Macalester students and contains an excellent discussion of the MCAT as well as additional information about applying to medical school.

Tests of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), administered by Educational Testing Service, was designed to evaluate English proficiency and is taken by people whose native language is not English. TOEFL registration and information materials are available at the Career Development Center. Computer-Based Testing is not available in some areas.

Foreign Service Written Exam (FSWE)
The first step to becoming a Foreign Service Officer is taking the Foreign Service Written Exam, which is offered once a year in the spring. The exam will measure your knowledge of subjects necessary for performing the tasks required of a Foreign Service Officer. There will be multiple-choice questions on a range of topics from the structure and workings of the U.S. Government to psychology to American culture to management and finance. The exam includes a job knowledge section, an English usage section, a biographic inventory, and an essay exercise. To be eligible, candidates must be U.S. citizens between the ages of 20 and 59, and be available for worldwide assignment. You can select your testing location from among hundreds of test sites around the world.
