Fellowships and Grants: Types of Fellowships, Grants, and Scholarships

Undergraduate

Macalester College, and a number of community partners, offer various grants, scholarships and awards to interested and eligible Macalester students. Students must be currently enrolled at Macalester. The funds are available to students who are interested in pursuing their academic and community engagement goals beyond classrooms. All students are encouraged to to apply.

Programs Requiring Institutional Nomination

Note that some scholarships such as the Rhodes, Marshall, and Watson require institutional sponsorship. Academic Programs at Macalester would need to selectively nominate student candidates for these scholarships.

For more information about the application process for these grants, contact contact the Dean of Academic Programs, Ellen Guyer (phone: 651-696-6036). Do not contact the programs directly for application materials, etc.

Fellowships, Grant, and Scholarship Websites

Graduate School

Various sources of funding exist for students pursuing graduate degrees after college. Graduate schools often offer internal fellowships for their students. Both the prospective graduate students and the students who are already enrolled in graduate school are elligble for these fellowships. In addition, there exist many outside sources of funding for graduate school students in the form of grants and fellowships. These fellowships are distributed based on academic achievement, ethnicity, nationality, gender, field of study, etc.

Independent and Post-Bachelor (Non-Graduate School) Fellowships

Funds are also available for students who are not going to graduate school, but would like to undertake a Post Bachelor study or training in their area of interest. Various grants and fellowships are available to students interested in pursuing post baccalaureate research or training. These fellowships do not require the candidates to attend graduate school to be elligble for funding.

Additional Tips and Resources

Some final notes….Be sure to also check with the faculty in your department for ideas and resources. And, start early on your research. Some programs have early fall deadlines or require multiple references, essays, interviews, etc. Students interested in highly competitive fellowships should begin planning a year to two years ahead of application.
