The Civic Engagement Center directs the following student
leadership programs:
* The Lives of
Commitment Program engages a select group of 35 first-year students
in weekly community service and intentional reflection on issues of
social justice, ethical and religious commitments, and the integration
of values with work. This program is sponsored by the Lilly Project for Work,
Ethics and Vocation. Contact Eily Marlow or Lucy Forster-Smith for more
information.
* The Leaders
in Service Program is made up of approximately 40 sophomores
through seniors who educate the campus about social issues, nurture
relationships with local nonprofit partners, and recruit volunteers.
Students participate in a retreat at the beginning of each semester and
participate monthly as a group in civic education and leadership
development. Contact Consuelo Gutierrez-Crosby
for more information.
* Through the Off-Campus
Student Employment Program over 50 students each year earn their
financial aid awards at local nonprofits and meet monthly for discussion
and training on social change. Students serve as liaisons between their
organization and the college and attempt to link the assets and
resources of both institutions. Contact Ruth Janisch Lake for
more information.
* The Opportunities
Abound Student Leader Program
Macalester students have several opportunities to
connect with a variety of youth groups who visit Macalester. Opportunities Abound leaders can indicate a
preference for
working with elementary, middle, or high school youth. During the year
long commitment leaders are supported through monthly training
sessions
(held the first Tuesday of each month from 4:30pm - 6:00pm) that will include
topics such as developing multicultural competencies in working with
youth, the role of a mentor and boundary issues, college test preparation
and the college application process. Contact Ruth Janisch Lake for more information.
* The Bonner Scholars Program
The Bonner Community Scholars Program is a joint program between the Civic Engagement Center, the Department of Multicultural Life and the Lilly Project for Vocation and Ethical Leadership. Through sustained partnerships the work of the Bonner Foundation strengthens student development, community impact, and campus infrastructure while promoting civic engagement, community building, diversity, international perspective, spiritual exploration, and social justice. The Bonner Scholar Program seeks to transform the lives of students by providing “access to education and opportunities to serve.” Contact Consuelo Gutierrez-Crosby for more information.
In addition, The Civic Engagement Center advises
students, faculty, and staff about volunteer
opportunities available with community partners. The CEC works
closely with individuals to help match their schedules, interests, and
volunteer goals with a partner organization.
