Student Organizations

There are over 80 student organizations at Macalester. Here is a sampling of student organizations with a community involvement focus. The CEC serves as a resource for any student organization interested in civic engagement or work in the community.

Amnesty International
Amnesty International seeks to raise awareness of human rights violations around the world. Students in this organization write letters to various governments, organize events, and bring speakers to campus.

Environmental Funk
Environmental Funk is a student organization concerned with the environment and environment-related political issues.

Habitat for Humanity
The campus chapter participates in regular volunteer projects and plans trips over fall and spring breaks. For more information, email the CEC or call us at x6040.

Mac Peace and Justice Committee (MPJC)
MPJC is dedicated to creating an awareness of peace and justice issues through education, outreach, and campus events. Members often work for change through letter writing campaigns, speakers, film presentations, group discussions and protests.

Feminists in Action (FIA)
FIA is a collection of Macalester students who are interested in issues involving feminism, gender, and equality both on and off the Macalester campus. FIA is not just for women, but for everyone interested in equality for all genders and people!

Students Together Against Rape and Sexual Assault (STARSA)
STARSA's goals include: increasing campus awareness of rape and sexual assault in the community and at Macalester, promoting action against sexual violence, and providing resources and support for students at Macalester. This organization also provides a forum for discussion on issues concerning sexual violence.

MACTION
This student-run organization coordinates one-time events such as the Blood Drive, International KidsFest and the Double Deal Auction. To get involved, call MACTION, x6440.

Mac Bike
The primary function of Mac Bike is to provide the entire community with free bicycle maintenance and repair. Students may themselves access the assortment of tools found in the shop, or learn from one of the student mechanics. Group rides are organized through the greater Twin Cities area during warmer months.

Mac Cares
The Macalester Conservation and Renewable Energy Society is dedicated to moving into a clean-energy future through practical projects on campus and through coordination and outreach with organizations working against global warming and oil politics to achieve a sustainable world.

Macalester Democrats
The Macalester Democrats organize rallies, forums, debates and work on political campaigns for the local DFL and National Democratic Party. Members also participate in service projects throughout the year.

Macalester Greens
The Greens are a student-run, activist-political organization that works to forward the Green Party's 10 key values: grassroots democracy, ecological wisdom, feminism, social justice, nonviolence, community-base economics, personal and global responsibility, respect for diversity, decentralization, and future focus. Macalester Greens work closely on projects with other student organizations of similar vision.

MacGOP
MacGOP is an organization established to represent, encourage, and promote interest and dialogue in contemporary conservative societal and political issues. In addition, MacGOP provides volunteer efforts, coinciding with the MN College Republicans, for Republican candidates across the state of Minnesota as well as nationally. Any politically interested conservative student is encouraged to join.

MaCECup
MaCECup promotes unity and multiculturalism by making and serving soup, a food uniquely suited to fostering a community spirit, and providing a comfortable haven for those students seeking companionship in a relaxed atmosphere.

Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG)
MPIRG works on social and environmental issues and campaigns. Issues have included corporate accountability, the information highway, financial aid and Earth Day.

Macalester Urban, Land, and Community Health (MULCH)
MULCH is the student organization that loves dirt and believes that getting dirty is healthy for the soil, healthy for us, and healthy for the campus community. We tend to the community garden by the field house and attempt to raise sustainable agricultural awareness as best we can.

Macalester Peace and Justice Committee (MPJC)
MPJC is committed to raising awareness about various progressive issues pertaining to the Macalester community and the greater global community through the organizing of speakers, discussions, circulation of petitions, and the coordination of demonstrations.
