The Bonner Community Scholars Program
at Macalester

 Bonner at Macalester
The Bonner Community Scholars Program is a four-year civic engagement program providing academic support, leadership programming, engagement opportunities and a social network to students dedicated to pursuing and integrating community engagement into their college experience. To be eligible for the program participants must have work-study as part of their financial aid package and a demonstrated commitment to community involvement.

First-year Bonners earn their work-study tutoring at local public schools.

Why be a Bonner?
Macalester’s Bonner Community Scholars have the opportunity to participate in Bonner’s cornerstone activities:

Through sustained partnerships the work of the Bonner Foundation strengthens student development, community impact, and campus infrastructure while promoting civic engagement, community building, diversity, international perspective, spiritual exploration, and social justice.

The Bonner Scholar Program seeks to transform the lives of students at 27 colleges and universities across the nation as well as their campuses, local communities, and nation by providing “access to education and opportunities to serve.”

Bonner/Macalester Partnership

  • Strengthens Macalester’s mission and commitment to service
  • Institutionalizes college access as a value of the college
  • Serves as a leader and model in the area of civic engagement programs
  • Increases the opportunity to build reciprocal partnerships with community organizations
  • Enhances Macalester’s existing community and civic engagement programs
  • Makes even more explicit the relationship between civic engagement, multiculturalism and college access
  • Provides access to a network of professional colleagues and students that hold the same values and commitment to service, community and civic engagement
