2009 Global Citizenship Student Award
The Global Citizenship Student Award is presented annually by Macalester College and the Institute for Global Citizenship to the graduating senior who best demonstrates a commitment to the ideals and practice of high academic performance, internationalism, multiculturalism, and civic engagement. This may be demonstrated through student work in a broad range of majors and disciplines, and the selection committee hopes the applicant pool will reflect diverse representation from the Humanities, Sciences, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences. Candidates must be nominated by a Macalester faculty or staff member. However, students who feel they are strong candidates may approach someone to discuss their interest and request a nomination for the award. The following basic criteria should be considered:
- Superior academic achievement
- Leadership in local, national, and/or international civic contexts
- The student's ability to articulate how their academic and personal development is preparing them for future service to the world and civic leadership
The winner of the Award will be announced during the 2009 Civic Forum (March 24-25, 2009). The student will receive a $500 prize and certificate, and have their name added to a permanent plaque commemorating Global Citizenship Student Award recipients in the Institute for Global Citizenship.
Additional information may be found at www.macalester.edu/internship or by contacting Michael Porter at x6251 or porter@macalester.edu.
The Process
Step 1: Faculty and staff members who wish to nominate a student should submit the name as soon as possible (preferably before winter break), and no later than February 13, 2009.
Please send this to Michael Porter, Chair of the Selection Committee. Please note this nomination must be followed by a formal letter of recommendation to be received no later than February 20, 2009.
Step 2: Students will be forwarded application material immediately upon receipt of the nomination. We strongly encourage students to begin the application process as early as possible, for it includes submission of: an original essay; a major, graded, academic project (e.g. essay, research paper, creative or artistic work) with abstract; a transcript, resume and two letters of recommendation.
Step 3: The student nominees must electronically submit a completed application file by February 20, 2009, to Michael Porter at porter@macalester.edu.
Please send all nominations at your earliest convenience to Michael Porter in the Internship Program at porter@macalester.edu. Please contact him with questions at that address or call x6251.
