Student Organizations

The staff of the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life work to nurture and challenge the faiths of Macalester community, and encourage all students with or without religious or spiritual practices. We work to assist student involvement in in religious communities both on and off campus. Students lead a variety of religious and spiritual organizations. Contact these leaders for more information.

The symbols pictured below were each chosen by members of the religious or spiritual organizations in the 2006-2007 academic year.

Baha'i Faith

An investigation of the Baha'i faith through meetings, speakers and scripture studies. All are welcome.

Catholic

 

Mac Catholics

Mac Catholics provides its members with support and opportunities to grow in their faith. It invites the campus community to a broader understanding of Catholicism through an annual dinner discussion. Fall and Spring retreats offer spiritual enrichment and reflection time. Mac Catholics also sponsors social activities and reaches out in service to the wider community.

Macalester Christian Fellowship

A group of Christians who seek to glorify God. Our purpose is to help Christians grow in their faith and to be witnesses of God's love. We are affiliated with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship.

Events: Large group meetings Thursday at 8pm in Dupre formal lounge; small group Bible Study on-going throughout the week (specifics to be announced).

Jewish

Macalester Jewish Organization (MJO)

Through educational and social programming for the entire community, MJO encourages an understanding of and pride in the Jewish heritage and provides a forum of support for the religious and cultural needs of Jewish members.

 

Events: Weekly MJO meetings are held in the Hebrew House (Kirk 8) on Tuesday nights at 10:00 pm. Campus wide "Open Shabbat" services are held every other Friday night in the Hebrew House (specifics will be announced throughout the semester). Check the MJO website for more event info!

Mac Protestants

This group is made up of multi-denominational Protestants who support liberal Protestant perspectives of the Christian faith. We use community service as a way of reaching out to other people.

Unitarian

 

Mac Unitarian Universalist

Macalester Unitarian Universalists is a student-led organization that exists to encourage and promote students in the exploration of their spirituality through the free and responsible search for truth and meaning and the sharing of individual religious insights and personal faiths.

 

Mac Unitarian Universalists aims to provide a comfortable space in which students may explore their spirituality and engage in thoughtful dialogue concerning the seven principles of Unitarian Universalism and an understanding of ways in which to engage the principles in everyday life. All are welcome regardless of faith tradition or background.

Muslim Student Association (MSA)

A meeting point for Muslims to discuss issues of theology, share concerns, and educate non-Muslims around misconceptions of Islam.

Events: Friday prayer meetings and Islamic holidays are celebrated in Macalester's Mosque.

MAAS

Mac Association for Alternative Spirituality (MAAS)

MAAS is an organization for those exploring alternative forms of spirituality, with an emphasis on the earth based pagan religions. Our members call themselves many different things but we strive to find a common ground to work from.

Events: Casual music based gatherings on the full moons; rituals around the main pagan holidays: mabon (fall equinox), samhain (halloween), yule (winter solstice), imbolc (February 1st), ostara (spring equinox) and beltane (May 1st).

Voices of Tamani

Voices of Tamani is a student run African-American gospel singing group at Macalester College. We perform regularly on campus and in the community.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes challenges coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.

At the heart of Buddhist practice is the commitment to awaken.Through weekly practice of zazen meditation, we take our seat at the still point of a turning universe, to discover a stillness and clarity of mind attentive to each moment of life's flow and the mystery of what we have always been. This group is open to anyone interested, no experience is necessary, and instructions will be provided.
