Robert C. Rossi

Laboratory Manager, Chemistry

B.S. ChE, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1993
U.S. Peace Corps, Fiji (Chemical Education), 1994
Ph.D., California Institute of Technology, 2001

Rob is a relatively recent arrival at Macalester, having taken on the full-time laboratory supervisor position in 2004. He comes to Macalester by way of Carleton College, where he was a visiting professor in the Chemistry department for several years, the California Institute of Technology, where he did his doctoral work on photoelectrochemical solar cells, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was a chemical engineer working on hybrid electric vehicle systems (before most people had ever heard of them).

Rob's academic interests include applied science, electrochemistry, solid-state Physics, alternative energy, transportation technology, energy policy, and general science teaching methods.

Rob's various research experiences led him to conclude that politics and public perceptions, rather than technology, are the principal obstacles to progress in alternative energy, and thus outside of work he is is active in politics (including serving as the webmaster for the Independence Party of Minnesota) and public policy.
