Tom Varberg arrived at Macalester College in 1993. He teaches courses in introductory and physical chemistry. His research is carried out in collaboration with Macalester students and is focused on the spectroscopy of gas-phase free radicals.  In 1998 he was named a Henry Dreyfus Teacher–Scholar by the Dreyfus Foundation in recognition of his work with undergraduate students.  To support this work, he has in the last five years received $650,000 in funding through four different grants from the National Science Foundation and the American Chemical Society.  In his time at Macalester, he has published 20 papers in scientific journals, many of these with Macalester students as co-authors.

He has held sabbatical appointments at Oxford University, at the NIST Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado and at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC.  In 2007-2008, he will be on sabbatical at the University of Sydney, Australia, where he will be undertaking experiments in astrochemistry and making astronomical observations of molecules in the interstellar medium.
