He was a National Science Fellow from 1959-62 and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Pi Sigma, and Phi Lambda Upsilon. He has received the Award for Distinguished Service from the Minnesota Academy of Science (1984), the Minnesota College Science Teacher of the Year award in 1989, the Macalester College Thomas Jefferson award in 1993, and was designated as a MegaMole contributor to Minnesota Chemistry Education in 1997.

Wayne C. Wolsey, professor, was named Minnesota College Science Teacher of the Year in 1989 and received Macalester's 1993 Thomas Jefferson Award. An inorganic chemist, Professor Wolsey is co-author (with Professor Emeritus Emil Slowinski) of the widely used general chemistry laboratory manual, Chemical Principles in the Laboratory, the sixth edition of which was published in 1996. In 1994-95 he spent his sabbatical leave as a faculty participant in the Oak Ridge Science Semester at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he was involved in developing field methods for measuring heavy metals in the environment.
