Chemdraw is a commercial package for drawing chemical structures. Our site license allows anyone with a Macalester email address to use it. This link lays out the steps for downloading ChemDraw for use on your personal Computer.

Spartan is a chemical modeling program that does detailed quantum mechanical calculations. This link provides instructions for installing Spartan '06 on your PC or Macintosh .

This link downloads the Wintropy program used in the General Chemistry Sequence (Windows platform only). It models possible microstates in defined systems.

Webtropy Online

This link points to an online version of Wintropy, which we call Webtropy. (It's slower than the application version, but it runs on any platform).

Lesser Chemistry Programs (we don't consider these as useful as the alternatives above, but they may be the only choice off-campus)

  • Chemistry Formatter and Add-ins
    Free software that formats text-form chemical equations and exponents, making it easier to insert them into Microsoft Office documents.
  • Advanced Chemistry Development Labs
    Makers of several chemistry-related drawing and visualization applications, including ChemSketch, a tool for drawing chemical structures which includes proton and C-13 NMR viewers.  They also offer a 3D molecule viewer that aids in the visualization of chemical compounds.
