Giving is lucky!

We need broad-based support in order to keep Macalester's exceptional academic and civic experience accessible to a broad base of students. Unlike some of our peer institutions where fewer than half the students qualify for financial aid, at Macalester 67% receive need-based financial aid. So you see, we need everyone's support to keep a Macalester education both extraordinary and accessible to students from all walks of life. |
Sydney Stilling ’67 wins Annual Fund’s Giving is Lucky contest
Sydney Stilling ’67 won a trip to China through the Annual Fund's Giving is Lucky contest.
The September alumni trip to China sold out so quickly the travel program added a second tour to meet demand. Lucky for Sydney Stilling ’67, two seats were reserved for her — or more precisely, for the winner of the Annual Fund’s Giving is Lucky contest. Alumni entered the contest by making gifts to the Annual Fund. Shortly after the close of last fiscal year on May 31, Stilling’s name was randomly drawn for one free trip with an option to buy a second for a companion. A better winner would have been hard to pick — Stilling has been giving back to her alma mater annually for the last 28 years.
Stilling reports that when the Annual Fund’s Danielle Nelson’05 called to break the news, it took her breath away. “What an amazing and unexpected blessing,” she later said, “That my twin sister Susan has decided to go as my roomie sets this trip up to be the trip of a lifetime. My Macalester education opened my eyes to all the possibilities that the world has to offer, and now it is providing the opportunity to see a spectacular part of it up close and personal. Thank you so much Macalester!”
Stilling and her twin sister, Susan Earp Gibson ’67, will join 23 other alumni for the China trip departing September 13, and will visit Beijing, Tibet, the Yangtze River and Shanghai.
