ITS Policies

All computing endeavors at Macalester, whether by students, staff members or faculty members, are governed by the Information Technology Responsible Use Policy. This document is an overarching statement of guidance, describing in broad terms what constitutes responsible and irresponsible use of Macalester's information technology resources. Links from within this policy lead to discussions of specific terms, definitions and guidelines.

Policy Statements

ITS has also developed some policy statements defining the limitations and methods of our services. These statements are encoded in .pdf format.

Policy on Response to Compromised Computers
Describes how we will respond to computers which have been compromised by viruses or hacking, and therefore pose a threat to other computers on our network.

Policy on Response to Copyright Violations
Describes how we will respond to notices of copyright violation on our network, such as illegal file-sharing.

Policy on Response to Disruptive Network Devices
Describes how we will respond to unsupported network devices which are disrupting services to other computers on our network.

Policy on Bandwidth
Describes how we are prioritizing uses of our network bandwidth to maximize performance and speed.

Policy on Service to Partner Organizations
Describes services ITS offers to partner organizations formally allied with the College.

Network Services in Residence Hall Rooms

In order to move into a College-owned on-campus residence hall, students must sign the Macalester Room and Board contract, administered by the Office of Residential Life. That contract includes the following line item concerning network services in residence hall rooms:

"The student shall....uphold both the letter and the spirit of Macalester's Information Technology Responsible Use Policy. I understand this policy and agree to abide by it. I understand that Information Technology Services policy statements govern the support I can reasonably expect, and I agree to abide by these policies as well."

By signing the Room and Board Contract, students are considered to be requesting a live network connection, whether or not they plan to use this connection. This is the only document students need to sign in order to have a live network jack available to them in an on-campus residence hall; no further application is necessary.
