Safe Computing - Campus Manager
& Network Registration
Network Registration is the process of
registering your computer on Macalester's intranet. Campus Manager is
the program we use to do this. Only on-campus computers are affected by
Network Registration.
Campus Manager allows us to track down and
isolate problem computers, for the protection of the rest of the
network. Basically, if your computer gets a virus, Campus Manager will
prevent it from contacting other computers. If your computer is
isolated, you will get a message when you try to browse the Internet.
How to Register
Registration happens the first time you try
to
access the Internet from your computer. You will need to re-register
every fall. If you do need to register your computer, you
will see a message when you try to browse the Internet. Log in with
your Macalester username and password, then follow the
instructions provided.
Campus Manager will attempt to scan your
computer and check for:
- Symantec Antivirus with current virus
definitions.
- Windows XP SP2
- Recent security updates provided by your
operating system manufacturer.
Note: We value and respect your privacy. We
will never use Campus Manager to scan your system
for specific files or personal information (other than the above
items). We will also never scan your computer without your knowledge
(in fact we can't, so don't worry about it).
Note 2: When you register a device, it is
associated with you. If you help a friend register their computer, make
sure you have them enter their own username and password.
Registering Other Devices
Some devices, like video game consoles, use
the
Internet but don't have Web browsers. You still need to register these
devices to get them on the network. While we hope to have an automated
system in place soon, for the time being you need to contact the Help
Desk at x6525. They will need the hardware (MAC) address of the device.
