Black Sea Project The Black Sea Project involves Macalester College, St. Paul, MN, the University of Puget Sound, Seattle, WA, (both in the USA), Zaporozhye State University in Zaporozhye, Ukraine, and the Chersonesus Museum Preserve, Sevastopol, Crimea, Ukraine, and professors, students and professionals in the field of archaeology from universities and colleges in the United States and Canada. The project involves the identification, and excavation of an ancient Greco-Roman site that was home to a variety of ethnic groups including ancient disapora Jewish communities along the south western shore of the Crimean peninsula. The team has worked for one season on the site of a fifth century basilica in ancient Chersonesus. The project invloves western scholars and archaeologists along with Ukrainian and Russian scholars who have extended their hospitality to us. Greek speaking peoples, including diaspora Jews are well attested in literary remains, but their material remains from the Roman period, at least, are few and far between. The Black Sea Project will add to our knowledge of this important and fascinating minority within the cuolturally diverse Roman world of the Black Sea region. The Black Sea Project opens up avenues of new knowledge and scholarly exchange in the field of archaeology between east and west. Methodological, technological, and historical collaboration and joint research are now going on in the Crimea in a way, and to an extent, that they have not been before. A full report of the first season is being prepared and will be listed at this address in the near future. Anyone who would like to praticiapte on the excavations should contact the J. Andrew Overman of Macalester College for an application. The Project is supported by the financial resources of individuals who pledge a tax-deductible gift to The Classic Department, Macalester College, St. Paul, MN 55105, Attn. Professor J. Andrew Overman of the Classics Department, the Director of the Project for Macalester College. Dr. Robert S.
