Professor Severy-Hoven specializes in Roman history and the history of women in the ancient Mediterranean. She has published a book on the development of Rome's first imperial family, Augustus and the Family at the Birth of the Roman Empire (Routledge 2003). Her more recent work involves the wall painting in a house in Pompeii, and the roles of women in different dynasties of the Roman empire. Her recent courses include Elementary Latin, Homeric Greek, Roman History, the Junior/Senior Seminar in Classics, and the First Year Course Amazons & Aristotle.
