Working With Media

Telling Your Story

Many individuals and offices have interesting stories to tell--new services, courses, research activities, awards, books, expertise, programs. If you have a story that should be told, or an opinion-page piece you'd like to write, call us to explore its possibilities. We'll work with you to find the best ways to tell your story and to connect with the reporters and editors most likely to be interested.

When a Reporter Calls

To help you feel better prepared to respond when reporters call (whether on a positive story or a negative one), we'll review with you some practical steps and point out what's acceptable practice with reporters and what isn't.

    • If you feel underprepared, tell the reporter you will need a little time before you respond. Before you hang up, find out the reporter's name, number, and deadline. Collect your thoughts (conferring with us may help) and do call back.
    • We have access to clipping services, so let us know about your media contacts and we'll watch for the stories

Publicizing an Event

We help departments and organizations publicize newsworthy events through news releases and media contacts.
Contact us at least three weeks before the event--eight weeks before a major event--so we can develop and distribute materials to meet media deadlines. We will need a written summary of the following

    • Name and description of the event,
    • Time, date, and location,
    • Admission price and reservation details, if any,
    • Names and credentials of speakers/performers, and
    • Significance of the event, topic, or speaker.

If you're unsure whether an event is newsworthy, or if you want some advice in making it more newsworthy, call and we'll talk it over with you.
