EPAG Minutes

Thursday, December 1, 2005

3:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Humanities 309

Ruthanne Kurth-Schai (Chair),  Jayne Niemi, Beth Cleary,  Joan Ostrove, Michael Schneider,  Ellen Guyer,  Karl Wirth,  Linda Schulte-Sasse, Peter Weisensel,  Caroline Ettinger, Diane Michelfelder

  1. Minutes:  The minutes from the last meeting were approved.
  2. Study Away:   We want to set aside a block of time reviewing study abroad.  To that end, Ruthanne proposed that study away (how the issue should be framed and how the review should be conducted) be our sole agenda item next week (December 8).  Ruthanne will be out of town.  Beth agreed to serve as the chair in her absence.   Our last meeting of the semester will be on December 15.
  3. Course proposals:  There were questions about the proposals from the psychology department and Humanities and Media and Cultural Studies.  The psychology proposal is to replace one course in research methods and statistics with a two-course sequence.  This proposal was discussed with the math department and the math department does not support it.  The HMCS proposal is to offer a 1-credit course called “Video for Courses”.  EPAG members from the affected departments recused themselves from the discussion.  The remainder of the group discussed both proposals.   In the case of the psychology proposal, the committee has more questions for the department, and would like to speak with Jaine Strauss at the December 15th meeting.  In the case of the HMCS proposal, Ruthanne will follow up with the chair on what alternatives there might be to adding this course to the curriculum.
  4. Linguistics:  The committee reviewed and discussed the latest version of the proposed interdisciplinary major.  The major was approved, contingent on the agreement of the department to bring the language/culture track down to 68 credits.
