RPC Meeting Minutes
November 29, 2006
Present: Collins, Flath, Heyman, Hornbach, Laskin, Latham, Michelfelder, Nedelsky, Rebert and Contant (ACE Fellow).
- Meeting was called to order at 2:10 pm
- Minutes from the meeting of November 8, 2006 were approved.
- There was a brief discussion about the two alternative ways of calculating Student/Faculty ratio. One is “revenue-salary” based (all paid faculty and students are counted as either 1 if paid or enrolled full-time and 1/3 if paid or enrolled part-time) or “face-time” were actual present headcounts are used (removing faculty on sabbaticals and students studying away. The committee decided to use the “revenue-salary” based method in its calculations and deliberations.
- Chair Heyman resumed the discussion of the faculty survey on the benefits of alternative options for improving academic quality and faculty support. Many suggestions were made to Chair Heyman, and there was discussion about several issues. Chair Heyman agreed to make a final revision to the survey before December 1 and circulate that final draft to the committee. The plan is to distribute the survey to faculty yet this semester and receive replies before the semester break.
- Chair Heyman indicated that Danny Kaplan had offered to discuss his ideas on alternative ways of counting faculty workload. The committee decided that Chair Heyman should indicate that the committee thought this would be more in the purview of FPC, rather than RPC.
- The next meeting will include updates from committee representatives to the Task Force on Budget, Benefits Committee, and possibly Task Force on Facilities.
- Meeting adjourned at 3:10 pm.
