RPC Meeting Minutes
March 21, 2007
Present: Flath, Heyman, Hornbach, Hoye, Latham, Michelfelder, Wheaton
- Meeting was called to order at 2:05 pm.
- Committee discussed an alternative to the draft proposal on faculty support. Dan Hornbach’s alternative proposal defines the issue we are trying to address as giving faculty time to do the things we need to do in order to be successful at the College. It proposes to give faculty a 2 course reduction in the academic year half-way between sabbaticals to faculty who make proposals to work on curricular development, student-faculty collaborative research, and connecting our teaching/scholarship to internationalism, multiculturalism and service.
- Provost Diane Michelfelder introduced a set of faculty sabbatical leave reports. These showed that many faculty currently use a portion of their sabbatical leaves to work on curriculum development and collaborative student-faculty research.
- The committee endorsed the general idea of changing the sabbatical cycle to grant one semester of paid leave after three full academic years of full time teaching (i.e. on a 4-year cycle). Faculty would use sabbatical leaves to do scholarship, curricular development, student-faculty collaborative research, and connecting our teaching/scholarship to internationalism, multiculturalism and service. Faculty would be allowed to “bank” a semester of leave to instead take one full year of paid leave after six years of full-time teaching. Faculty would be restricted to normally take no more than one full year of leave (paid or unpaid) during any seven year period. The new sabbatical cycle would be phased in over a 4 to 5 year transition period, according to the following schedule. Note the first year of the transition was arbitrarily chosen to be AY 2010.
AY 2009-eligible for leave if last leave was AY 2002 or earlier (current cycle)
AY 2010-eligible for leave if last leave was AY 2004 or earlier (transition)
AY 2011-eligible for leave if last leave was AY 2006 or earlier (transition)
AY 2012-eligible for leave if last leave was AY 2008 or earlier (transition)
AY 2013-eligible for leave if last leave was AY 2009 or earlier (new cycle)
- The committee called for us to model the impact of the proposed sabbatical system on the faculty as a whole and on a selection of several large and small departments. This model should use actual employment data for current faculty, and make reasonable assumptions about new faculty.
- The meeting adjourned at 3:30 PM.
Respectfully submitted by James Heyman
