Student Employment Advisory Committee
SEAC Meeting 12/20/2006
Attending: Cindy Darrow, Karin Zeller, Mary Williams, Jenae Schmidt, Jacki Betsworth
Mission / Structure Review & Discussion
The committee reviewed the document posted on the web site and agreed to make changes to the following areas:
- Change terminology in the mission statement from “Office of Financial Aid” to “Office of Student Employment”.
- The committee:
- Serves as a liaison between sector constituents and Student Employment.
- Raises concerns of faculty, staff & students with regards to Student Employment.
- Promotes programs and activities of student employment.
- Serves in an advisory capacity for the current and future direction of student employment at Macalester College.
- Committee Structure
- Clarification of advisory members – called upon as needed – do not have to attend each meeting. Financial Aid will remain ex-officio.
- Change structure to 2 small [1-10 student employees], [11-50], 2-3 large [51+]
Reasons for greater large employer representation: most of issues raised come from this sector, and a majority of students are employed by them.
Campus Visibility & Participation
Members present were pleased with reception of the fall Sneaky Snack initiative. Its continuation will depend on whether staff and treat funds are available this spring. The group brainstormed ways to connect with constituents:
- Hold a discussion session 1-2x/year, open to all supervisors, as an initial exposure to SEAC and its processes.
- Divide sector contacts more equitably among sector reps.
- We need to make a much stronger push to proactively solicit input from small/medium employers.
- Send email to small sector contacts asking for volunteers to fill the vacancy through the end of this academic year. [update: two nominees have been contacted by Jenae; the position should be filled by February.]
Other Business
- In future, SEAC will not submit an annual budget recommendation to TFOB. This is more appropriately submitted by the Student Employment Administrator, now that there is a fully funded position at the college.
Next meeting
- All members should query sector contacts and come with input concerning the Student Employee of the Year award and related events:
- What would you like to see happen on campus for Student Employment Week?
- Will it involve any money? (SEAC has no money of its own. $500 is available for the SEOTY award this year, but these funds may not be available on a recurring basis.)
- Readers for nominations - Mary wants input from SEAC before making a final decision about changes in the selection process.
- Jenae will update and distribute the sector contact list.
- "Say Cheese!" - Picture of our committee for SEAC webpage
Respectfully submitted,
Jacki Betsworth
