SEAC Meeting November 8, 2007
Attendees: Christy, Meghan, Nick, Julie, Cindy, Mary, Jenae, Betsy, Jacki
Approval of Minutes
Nick motioned to approve / Meghan 2nd. Unanimously passed.
Employment award amounts for 2008-2009
Financial Aid has no plans to increase awards for 08/09. Jenae Schmidt brought the issue to SEAC. Discussion points included:
- Some employers are not happy with award amounts, because higher pay rates mean fewer hours on the job. They would like to see higher awards, especially for juniors & seniors.
- Requests for award increase have grown in recent years. The as needed request method has been successful but is becoming more frequent. Concern that we don’t want to set them up to overextend.
- Award was initially intended to give each student 10-12 hours/week, then considered an optimal workload. Current SEAC members support 10 hour average.
- If there is no award increase, there should be no pay increase.
- Students who can’t work all their hours usually have to work within a timeframe that doesn’t jibe with their schedules.
- No need to increase for Internationals, since they request as needed and are already at a high level.
- In 2009, Mac’s pay scale will need to be adjusted to comply with minimum wage requirements.
ACTION: Jenae will schedule a preliminary meeting with Brian Lindemann. After he, Jenae, and Mary talk, he &/or Nels will represent our interests at TFOB.
Updated Dept. List / Survey
- Thanks to Cindy for updated list.
- A sample contact letter was shared. Could include a link to S.E. web site, but Mary feels it is redundant and may not be worth the effort.
- Survey
- Mary’s individual survey efforts have been productive. She will use the info to implement new procedures. Because of her efforts, the contact letter to constituents might be enough. If we get feedback on a particular subject, we could revisit the survey issue.
- A student survey might be useful.
ACTION: All will email student survey questions to Betsy. She will compile by next meeting.
Reports and New Business - Mary
- Reallocation – only one person so far has said they have more student allocation than work. There are places where more budget money could be used. 90% feel their workload and budget are balanced.
- SE Celebration – SETY info will go out in December. For future discussion – how can we promote it more? Many departments did not respond last year. National Student Employee Week is 2nd week in April.
Guidelines for Conduct
Mary will include in student handbook. SEAC is welcome to draft general rules and submit to Mary for consideration.
ACTION: All will send suggestions for handbook to Betsy. All submissions to Betsy by 12/6.
Next meeting 12/13/07
Respectfully submitted,
Jacki Betsworth
