Migration Between 1976 and 1986, 64% of the city's population was composed of migrants from all regions of Bolivia. In 1986, one third of the population had been born outside the city. Although previously migration only took place from the rural areas of the department, recently more migrants have come from the Altiplano. The percentage of Altiplano migrants grew from 40% in 1976 to 60% in 1986. This has been a reflection of troubles in the Altiplano's economy rather than a significant increase in job opprotunities in Bolivia. Most migrants work in the informal service sector and live in the south of the city. From Library of Congress: Case Study on Bolivia |
