Bombay Development Department

 

The Bombay Development Department(BDD) was responsible for the Back Bay Reclamation project after it was abandoned by the CIT. They were responsible for providing more land for housing and constructing 50000 tenements on that reclaimed land. They were also required to develop Salsette Island and provide adequate water supply to the city of Bombay. At the same time they also reclaimed Marine Drive along the southern coast of the island of Bombay and began developing suburbs to the north.

In 1947, due to the mass migration of rural Indians into Bombay, the BDD devised "The Master Plan for Bombay." The plan was intended to relieve traffic congestion, aid sanitation problems, and help alleviate cramped industrial development. It also called for the development of the Eastern and Western highways and the satellite town of New Bombay.

Unfortunatedly the plan did not help much, and in 1964 another "new" plan was created. The plan had four main goals. They were:

However, action in Bombay, especially action through urban development, is very slow and only parts of the plan succeeded.

In other words, Mumbai is what developers have made in response to periodic and pressing problems at different points in time.
