Kolis

The Kolis are the native, traditional fishing population of Mumbai. They still live in the islands and their traditional means of fishing can be observed just outside of Mumbai along the 40 mile Arabian sea coast. They still live in native villages and live by fishing the waters along the shore in small wooden boats. They speak their own dialect and observe their own customs. The largest community is in Versova--15 miles north of Mumbai. In fact, the word Mumbai is derived from the Koli word, Mumba, which means goddess of water.
