Discussion Questions On Field Assignments
I would like to add a little structure to our discussion of your field reports. As I said in class on Wednesday, many of you did fantastic jobs on this assignment so we should be able to have meaningful discussions.
As you read over your reports think about the following themes.
What evidence did you see of the "proclaimed landscape"? The idea of proclaimed landscape comes from our desire to interpret places to others. Some of the markers are historic-describing events that occurred in the past, others tell about the physical geography of the place.
What sorts of icons did you see?
What stories of the human condition are contained in the landscape?
How does the landscape function as a sign that gives advice orders, cajoles, entices, encourages, discourages, and gives warnings?
What evidence does the landscape contain of power relationships?
What evidence does the landscape contain about relationships among people of different?
Genders,
Sexuality,
Economic status,
Race,
Ethnicity,
Language,
Religion
Can you describe how landscape tastes are shown in the landscape?
Can you describe how this landscape worked on your feeling (comfort, joy, pleasure, contentment, sense of peace, security,)?
