Books 1-6: Read.
Book 7: After an indecisive battle between the Trojan leader Hector and Great Ajax, there is a pause in the fighting. The Trojans pressure Paris to give up Helen. He refuses, but promises to turn over a great deal of wealth in restitution. The Greeks refuse his offer and build a wall to protect their ships.
Books 8-9: Read.
Book 10: Odysseus and Diomedes spy on the Trojans and kill Dolon and the Thracian king, Rhesus.
Book 11: Read.
Book 12: Under Hector's leadership, the Trojans break through a gate in the Greek walls and threaten the ships.
Book 13: Contrary to Zeus' order that the gods stay out of the fighting, Poseidon rallies the Greeks under Idomeneus and the Ajaxes.
Book 14: Read.
Book 15: Zeus wakes up and forces Poseidon to stop helping the Greeks. Apollo rouses Hector to lead the Trojans as far as the Greek ships, where he tries to burn them. Patroclus pleads with Achilles to fight.
Book 16: Read.
Book 17: A long and violent fight over the fallen Patroclus ensues. Hector manages to strip off and take Achilles' armor, but Menelaus and the Greeks recover the warrior's body.
Books 18-19: Read.
Book 20: Now that Zeus has fulfilled his promise to Thetis, the other gods are free to join in the war. Aligned with the Greeks are Athena, Hera, Poseidon, Hephaestus, and Hermes; Apollo, Ares, Artemis, Aphrodite, and Leto help the Trojans. Aeneas fights with Achilles, but is rescued by Poseidon; similarly Apollo saves Hector.
Books 21-24: Read.
