Textbooks

Four books have been ordered for this course and are available through the textbook center in the Lampert Building on Snelling and Grand.

Required:

Dixon, Suzanne. 2001. Reading Roman Women. London.
Ginsburg, Judith. 2006. Representing Agrippina. Constructions of Female Power in the Early Roman Empire. Oxford and New York.

Recommended:

D. Kleiner and S. Matheson (eds.) 2000. I, Claudia II. Women in Roman Art and Society. Austin.
J. Hallett and M. Skinner (eds.). 1997. Roman Sexualities. Princeton.

Please consult with me immediately if you have difficulties obtaining any of these. Some reading assignments will also be provided through electronic reserve through the Macalester library website or other sources online. Since we will be discussing these readings extensively, you must bring a hard copy of the text to class, although you may share with one other colleague. The books are chosen not only for reading assignments in class, but as outstanding content and bibliographic resources in the development of your research projects.
