Schedule of readings: Hebrew passages and articles listed are to be
prepared in advance of the specified class date. All articles are chapters
in books on reserve at DeWitt Wallace library AND on electronic reserve
unless otherwise noted. Written assignments are due at the beginning
of class on the specified date. Late assignments will suffer point deductions
at the rate of 10% per elapsed class period.

SECTlON 2: MODERN HEBREW
Congratulations! You have almost finished your survey of the Hebrew
language and
the Macalester College language requirement. This section of the course
will deal
exclusively with the spoken language of Israel today. We will use the
xeroxes and CDs
from the language learning system entitled Hebrew from Scratch. You
will need to purchase a Hebrew dictionary as well as a 3-ring notebook
to keep all the
xeroxes together. There will be supplemental videos, modern Israeli poetry,
music
CDs, newspaper articles and children’s books. There will be a short
quiz every
Monday on the vocabulary and grammatical material covered the previous
week. You
will be responsible for all the material listed on the pages for each
day, prepared in
adv,ance of class. There will be written assignments two-three days a
week, specified
in class and posted on the course web page. The vocabulary will be your
biggest
challenge. Start memorizing now! The vocabulary to know is listed at
the beginning of
each chapter. There will be required supplemental vocabulary for the
videos, Hebrew
songs and childrens books.

Exam: The one-hour ‘midsemester’ exam will take place during
the regularly scheduled
finalslot of finals’week = 20% of final grade. Saturday, May 8
10:30 a.m.
Written work and class participation
Written assignments will be given in class and subsequently posted on
the web page
(surn of both halves of the semester written assignments = 15%). They
are due at the
beginning of class period. Late homework will be accepted only up to
the next class
period and will receive a deduction of 10%. Homework more than one class
period
late is not accepted.
Class participation and attendance as noted on original syllabus = 15%
of final grade
