Part I. Short Identifications. (10 points each)
In about a paragraph, explain the context in which we discussed, and thus relevance
to the study of architecture, archaeology and/or the ancient city, of 2
of 5 items.
Examples: polis, luxury.
Part II. Essays. (40 points each)
Four of the following questions will appear on the exam; you
will need to answer two of them.
- Defend or refute: Religion was the medium through which key social relationships
were defined in both Greek and Roman cities.
- How did the function and meaning of the column change over the time periods
we have investigated?
- Defend or refute: Political forms are reflected in architecture both public
and private.
- Defend or refute: The Athenians did an amazing job convincing a wide variety
of people that their city defined culture and civilization.
- How does the site of Pompeii provide evidence for the complex social, political
and commercial life of a small ancient Italian city?
