Part I. Short Identifications. (10 points each)

In about a paragraph, explain the context in which we discussed, and thus relevance to the study of architecture, archaeology and/or the ancient city, of 2 of 5 items.

Examples: polis, luxury.

Part II. Essays. (40 points each)

Four of the following questions will appear on the exam; you will need to answer two of them.

  1. Defend or refute: Religion was the medium through which key social relationships were defined in both Greek and Roman cities.

  2. How did the function and meaning of the column change over the time periods we have investigated?

  3. Defend or refute: Political forms are reflected in architecture both public and private.

  4. Defend or refute: The Athenians did an amazing job convincing a wide variety of people that their city defined culture and civilization.

  5. How does the site of Pompeii provide evidence for the complex social, political and commercial life of a small ancient Italian city?
