Alex Park

Alex Park began writing as an accident of fate. A prominent member of his high school cheerleading team, Park made national news with his article, “Squad Discrimination: Don’t Step on Me.” The article revealed cheerleading politics for what they are, explaining that, “I joined the team to show my school spirit, but that’s not what it feels like when I’m standing at the bottom of a pyramid, smelling the feet on my shoulders and feeling my vertebrae compress one by one. When I mention that I would like to have a chance to be on the top of the pyramid, I am not even taken seriously. They tell me I’m too tall. Well, if that’s not discrimination, I don’t know what is.” Soon afterwards, Park’s wish was granted. Unfortunately, he discovered exactly why he had never been asked to be on the top of the pyramid when his teammates failed to catch him on the way down. With a badly sprained ankle, Park was taken out of competition for the remainder of the year. Having learned from the experience the power of his written word, Park began to spend his time writing, and the rest is history.

Park lives in St. Paul, MN. Besides his article “Squad Discrimination,” this is his first major publication.
