Bandung Kota, City of Flowers: The Geography

It is located 180 km southeast of Jakarta. Bandung is situated on the Parahayangan plateau 768 meters above sea level with a cooler climate throughout the year than the rest of the country. The Parahayangan plateau is actually an ancient lake basin. It is surrounded by mountains, many of which are active volcanos. These include the high peaks of Tangkubanparahu, Burangrang and Bukit Tunggul. The principal River flowing through the Bandung Region is the Citarum although it does not actually flow through Bandung City like the Cikapundung River.

Bandung is located on the major rail and highway routes through Java. It is connected to the region through the Husein Sastra Negara airport.

Internal Structure

Bandung is an elongated city stretching along the superior transportation networks of the trans-Java highway and railway. The CBD is located in the center of the city around the central park of Agun-Agun and Braga street, the main commercial sector. Agun-Agun is home to the historic center of government with the old Palace, the main mosque, and the central post office. However, the government center was moved farther north with the building of the Gedung Sate, and this pulled the CBD towards this direction along with the railroad station, towards Braga. The north side of the city is more wealthy, with the amenities of the major universities, the airport, the shopping areas, the cultural institutions, the northen volcanoes and lush areas, and many parks close by. The south, downriver from the more exclusive section, is the site of Bandung's famed textile industry. A chinatown is located around the Pasar (Market) Baru, which was formed seperately from the old central business district when new Chinese migrants began to dwell in Bandung with the arrival of the railroad.

Future and Planning

Planning is not a new concept in Bandung. Braga street and the older section and particlar were planned by the Dutch when they set up Bandung to be their new capital. The Braga street area was regulated by these authorities to insure its European nature in the building styles. The municipal, regional, and national governments are now intervening in Bandung. They are attempting to create a booming high tech industry in Bandung. There are also efforts to decentralize the city to alleviate crowding. New government office buildings have been built farther from the city center and the end of the regime of Suharto many changes have been made in the local government to stem corruption and waste. The Community Developement Infrastructure Scheme has brought many communities into the democratic process while giving districts funding for small-scale infrastructure. Bandung has also taken on a sort of Metropolitan government with the adoption of Bandung Raya, or greater Bandung. This strategy has basically annex the outlying areas of the Bandung Metropolitan Region
