Trams are also very popular, carrying six hundred million passengers each year. This figure has been increasing since 1985, meaning that the trams are becoming more crowded, because track length has been diminishing as road improvement plans have required their territory, and their services have been replaced buses, trollies, and extended Metro lines. However, some new tram lines have been reached to new residential areas. The network has 172 km of track, carrying 30 major routes. An inner circular line links Pest and Buda across the Margit Bridge, and additional lines fan out from this major link to inner suburbs and neighborhoods. As the bridges continue to increase in congestion, this direct service will probably continue to increase in popularity as a means of crossing from one former city to the other.
