Residential Patterns in Halifax

This map shows the residential patterns of several different economic groups on Halifax's peninsula in 1971-72. Notice the location of the affluent and middle-income residential areas represented by the numbers 3,4,8. Similar to residential patterns in other cities, Halifax's wealthier population has moved further away from the central business district.

However, the combination of urban renewal programs in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as the increase in citizen participation in the planning of the downtown in recent years, has begun to change this pattern and several new residential developments are being created closer to the CBD.
