The concept and method of geomancy rests on the belief that if a city, residence, or burial ground is built on an ideal site, then happiness and prosperity will prevail over those that reside there. An ideal site, myongdang, is where the outer and inner energies of the mother earth are in accord with one another, producing wind and water. These energies of the earth influence those that choose that piece of land. A myongdang is surrounded by mountains-- a high rugged range to the north (the turtle), and hills folded in many ranges to the right (the white tiger) and left (the blue dragon). A river flowing through the site also makes it a good location.
