The West End

The West End developed as a link between The City and Westminster. This area became a popular place for wealthy residents because many noblemen had settled along the Strand and the West End was upwind from the river so residents did not receive the stench of the city and the polluted river.

The West End contains such famous places as

Covent Garden

Re gents Park

Trafalgar Square

Bloomsbury

Covent Garden was once the main vegetable market, and is now a trendy shopping area.

Regents Park was designed and built to separate the rich residential areas from the working class areas. Regents Park is now home to the famous London Zoo.

There are also many institutions in the West End, including many art galleries, hospitals and the University College London. Many of these were established and built during the nineteeth century
