Cochabamba: City Model

Cochabamba fits the 'new and improved' model with segregation of classes and city functions. The market and CBD are found in the downtown region. . The West and North part of the city houses the middle and upper income people of Cochabamba. The Southern part of the city is a lower-income area. Most migrants who come from other parts of Bolivia settle in this area.

Migration

Between 1976 and 1986, 64% of the city's population was composed of migrants from all regions of Bolivia. In 1986, one third of the population had been born outside the city. Although previously migration only took place from the rural areas of the department, recently more migrants have come from the Altiplano. The percentage of Altiplano migrants grew from 40% in 1976 to 60% in 1986. This has been a reflection of troubles in the Altiplano's economy rather than a significant increase in job opprotunities in Bolivia. Most migrants work in the informal service sector and live in the south of the city. From Library of Congress: Case Study on Bolivia

As one can see in the photograph, the roads are unpaved in this area and the inhabitants are not given as many basic amenities such as electricity and water as in the north not to mention other services. Often times informal housing and settlements rise up as migrants come into the city and the city council does not know where to house them.View of Laguna Alalay from South
